OU students to host annual Relay for Life event, raise money for American Cancer Society

Relay for Life will return to OU’s campus this weekend to raise money for cancer research, and is decorating the campus with purple ribbons in advance to increase awareness.

OU’s Relay for Life fundraiser will take place from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. April 20 on the South Oval, said Alex Berney, Relay for Life chair. The annual event raises money for the American Cancer Society.

The night will feature several miniature entertainment activities and smaller fundraising events, including performances by the American Indian Student Association and a local band, a lip sync battle, a date auction and more, Berney said.

In order to engage the campus and raise awareness prior to the event, the Relay for Life team is celebrating “Paint the Campus Purple Week” by decorating the campus with purple ribbons, putting purple rubber ducks in fountains and other initiatives throughout the week.

Although the team does not have a specific fundraising goal, its goal is “to grow every year,” Berney said.

“We want to make sure we leave everything on the table as far as being able to impact as many lives as we can on campus and in the community beyond, too,” Berneys said.

Last year’s event raised $260,000, Berneys said, with all of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
